Welcome to A Walk Through Time Online, a scientific
understanding of the evolution of life on Earth. We offer this story
on the Web in the conviction that it is a rich and deeply meaningful
context for identifying and addressing the most critical issues
of the future.
To take this Web Walk, imagine yourself walking along
a meandering stream for a mile, encountering the story of life's
five-billion-year evolution by reading 90 panels situated at intervals
along the trail. Imagine that with every foot of that mile you are
moving one million years down the evolutionary path. As you follow
the stream, remember that between the first dated panel (4600 million
years ago) and the next (4500 million years ago), you have walked
100 feet and the water in the stream has flowed for 100 million
years. And so it continues for the next 3600 million years.
After 40 panels, the times and distances become shorter
and shorter, up to the present (it's not that more happened; we
just know more the closer we come to the present). Try to keep those
time and distance images in your mind as you move from panel to
panel.
